I find that the easiest way to start is to use egg carton cups. Plant 5-8mm deep and keep the soil moist in bright indirect sunlight. Seeds germinate in soil temperatures 24°C-35°C (75-95°F). Expect to see seedlings within 7-10 days.
When seedlings have developed their true leaves, detach individual eggcups and plant directly into their bed (roots are strong enough to punch through the cardboard and it will disappear into the soil by the end of the season). This allows you to plant without disturbing the delicate baby roots. Eggplants love the sun - plant them in a place where they can get 8 hours of sunlight per day. Give the seedlings space – they can grow to be a metre (3ft) across.
