Rosella is a warm weather plant, preferring soils that are 25-35°C (77-95°F). Rule of thumb for temperate climates: sow indoors under warmth and good light 6 weeks before the last expected frost.
Sow seeds into punnets with a good seed-starter mix. Sow 2 seeds in each hole about 10mm (.4”) deep. Seeds should germinate in 2-3 weeks in warm soil, thin out the weakest of the 2 seedlings and transplant seedlings after they have developed 2-4 of their true leaves. Only set them outside after all danger of frost is gone.
Water deeply as needed, avoid wetting the leaves too much to avoid fungal disease.
Rosella will grow into a tall, wide bush, so space plants 1-1.5m (3-4.5’) apart when planting out. Enjoy the beautiful hibiscus blooms on the bush, and then harvest at about 20-25 weeks, whenever the blooms have faded and the calyxes have developed into the rosella fruit.
