Jungle Jim started off as a 1934 comic strip chronicling the adventures of Jim Bradley, a famous hunter who was nicknamed Jungle Jim. The illustrator of the strip Alex Raymond, wanted it to run above, or be a topper to another comic strip that premiered at the same time, Flash Gordon. Both of them turned out to be popular comic strips, as well as being transformed into old time radio shows. This old time radio serial series was hugely popular. A little deeper than most juvenile old time radio series, this show appealed to a wide audience.
It only took a year for Jungle Jim, also known as The Adventures Of Jungle Jim, to go from the comics to an old time radio show. Matt Crowley played the Jungle Jim character for three years, then the great Gerald Mohr stepped in and took the lead. Jungle Jim was a hunter and adventurer. He came across tribes both friendly and hostile, and hadencounters with poachers, spies, you name it, this show was action packed. Jungle Jim, like most old time radio adventure shows had a sidekick, Kolu, who was a native, and Jungle Jim's go to guy. And later in the series they added a female, a femme fatale named Lille DeVrille.
While many of the episodes were themed for jungle adventure, as World War II came closer they also had some wartime adventures thrown in. Jungle Jim was a serial type show, meaning a particular story line would last many episodes, so because there are are only about half the episodes produced left today, there will be gaps in the stories. As old time radio fans know, this happens quite often, as in this case. The good thing is that there are enough episodes still left that you can pretty easily fill in the blanks for most of the series.
It's thought by most OTR researchers that there were 980 episodes produced, although it is uncertain if every episode produced aired in the first place. We have 480+ episodes on a two disc MP3 CD set. Each episode is just under 15 minutes.
This ain't no little kiddie show! Out of all the old time radio shows that were produced with a younger crowd in mind, Jungle Jim is probably the most mature of the bunch. This series had a large adult audience back then, as it does now. If action, and adventure of all types is your idea of great old time radio listening, this show is for you.
During and after the old time radio and comic strip run of Jungle Jim, there were numerous movies made, and the character was used in a TV series. Today, Jungle Jim still has a large following of fans, in all of it's different formats.
