Running on NBC and sponsored by American Tobacco, Big Story was a wildly popular old time radio show. It featured crime and corruption stories from real newspaper reporters and journalists. Whatever story made that weeks show got the contributing reporter a $500 check from Pall Mall, which was the product sponsor. The producers of the show made sure all stories were factual, the only thing omitted from the story (not always though) were real names.
As mentioned before, the Big Story old time radio show was very popular when it aired. So popular that the ratings for Big Story matched that of Bing Crosby's Philco Radio Time show. Bing owned the airwaves, so this was a big accomplishment for a radio show.
The only bad thing about the Big Story old time radio show is that there are so few episodes left today. It's estimated that around 380 episodes were produced and aired between 1947 to 1955. The narrator was the great Barry Kroeger, who was later replaced by Robert Sloane. Also the sponsor changed from Pall Mall to Lucky Strike cigarettes.
The Big Story, and other shows like it, were very popular with old time radio listeners, also the studios didn't have to pay for original scripts. Also, as we all know that truth usually is stranger than fiction. And with all the stories being true, just made them that much more interesting.
