In old time radio we have a first with this great otr series Have Gun Will Travel...this was the first old time radio show that was adapted from a TV series!! Have Gun Will Travel was an old time radio western series that starred the great radio voice of John Dehner, who played the part of Paladin. Ben Wright played Hey Boy, and Virginia Gregg played Miss Wong. In old time radio you couldn't ask for a better cast. Even competing against the TV, the radio version of Have Gun Will Travel lasted 2 years, and broadcast a total of 106 episodes. The duration of the show just attests to the fact that old time radio was as good as TV, but we all know that, right? Even the theme song from this old time radio great became a hit single.
The main character, Paladin, was a hired gun, most of us probably remember the image of his business card from the Have Gun Will Travel Radio Show. When on a job, Paladin tried, but wasn't always successful, in handling matters peacefully. But of course when he had to go to his holster, he was quick and accurate. But the character may be remembered just as well for being a gambler, bon-vivant, a gourmet, and a speculative investor. In the series Have Gun Will Travel, Paladin was based out of a suite of rooms at The Carlton Hotel in San Francisco.
Paladin always started his day checking out the pile of newspapers he subscribed to, checking on his investments, and looking for his next adventure. He placed ads for his services in newspapers across the country. If anyone needed his services they simply followed the instructions to wire him in S.F.
Paladin also means 'Knight' and his card and holster had an image of the 'Knight' chess piece. His services didn't come cheap. If you wired Have Gun Will Travel to his San Francisco home you had to be prepared to pay $1000 plus expenses for his services. He would also work for a piece of the action, or if he felt it was a worthy cause, almost for free. In one of the Have Gun Will Travel episodes he only made $1.60.
One more thing to note about this old time radio great is that many of the scripts that were used for the TV show were also used for the old time radio show. Also, Have Gun Will Travel was considered by many to have more mature and edgy scripts than many other old time radio shows.
Of course old time radio western fans will like the show, but even if you're not a true western fan, I think there's a good chance you'll like this show just based on the strength of the scriptwriting and acting.
