The Adventures Of The Abbotts has been called by many to be the best old time radio show that never made it big, or lasted a long time. Adventures Of The Abbotts was the perfect storm of great writing, the best acting, and outstanding production. The reason this show died on the vine was that box that started showing up in everyone's house during this time, the television!

Frances Crane originated the Abbott characters, a husband and wife team. And the Abbott 'team' started it's first foray into old time radio started in 1946 with Pat and Jean Abbott solving crimes together. The old time radio formula for husband and wife team crimefighters proved to be very popular during the Golden Age of Radio. The first version went a year, or one season. It just didn't catch, and as far as anyone knows, none of those shows were ever saved. Now, fast forward to 1954, starring Claudia Morgan, and Les Damon, the show was nothing short of spectacular. The dialogue between this crime fighting couple was entertaining, mysterious, and sultry.

To be perfectly frank, this show should have never even been on the radio! After listening to a few episodes, if the right actors could have been found this series should have been a series of Hollywood big screen hits. The plots varied from murders to espionage, and all of them were good. Adventures Of The Abbotts also did a couple of things that were unique in old time radio. First, Jean Abbott (Claudia Morgan) did most of the narration and telling of the story. The other thing that catches your eye (or ear) is that all of the titles have colors in the title's name, such as "The Blue Rocket Express", it just reminds many of the Travis McGee novels by John McDonald.

Typically, it was the husband Pat (Don Briggs, Les Damon, then Mandel Kramer) who was the private investigator, but Jean was always there, and she shouldered her own weight in solving that episode's crime or mystery. It's estimated that there were originally 35 episodes produced. But we're pretty lucky here to have 18 of them. Each show is about a half hour long.

Here at Eddie's we could write pages about this show, but just listen to the sample episode. This one is a no brainer for ANY fan of old time radio. Especially if you like the more contemporary dramas. Mature acting and stories.
