A Decorative Kitchenalia Object For The Home.
A profusely decorated porcelain enameled and gilt tea canister with a brass mount, made by the Capodimonte firm in ca. 1860-70.
A typical Victoriana object, very necessary for the drinking of tea. The very essence of the periods fashionable “Bon Ton,” when the first of the season tea’s from the Far East commanded the highest prices; and was to be enjoyed at it’s very best.
Glimpse into a world, before the arrival of the ubiquitous and shabby leaking teabags. An era, where Orange Pekoe ranked as the Queen, among the many varieties of World Teas. A globe, where one could “Pick” and “Blend” one’s very own tea to suit one’s own taste; and cater to both the “mood” of the moment and time of day.
Today however, one has primarily but one sort of tea; and all rather blandly bagged up.
Formerly one had a wider choice, such as morning tea, elevenses, noon tea, afternoon, or high tea and evening tea. Even Sunday tea, was something quite different and more special than today.
For the more adventurous, and perhaps to break with the daily routines, a tea caddy or canister would be well worth the effort. It’s a way of sitting at home and bringing your own taste, and personalized exotic Far East right into the room.
So choose you own weapons in the park at dawn; take 10 paces, then make your very own individual brew in a teapot, or use a drab, soaking tea bag.
