Victorian Trade Card - Arbuckle Brothers Coffee Company - "HIGHER EDUCATION FOR WOMEN" (#9)
SERIES: Satire
This is one of 100 cards featuring humorous cartoons and advertising the "Ariosa" brand of coffee that Arbuckles' issued in the late 1880s. All the illustrations were originally published in either Puck, Judge, or Texas Siftings, three of the more popular satirical periodicals of the day. Most typically aimed their derision at blacks, country "rubes", or the Irish. This particular card was based on an 1888 Texas Siftings cartoon drawn by Blashfeld and features a man who's suffering from the effects of his wife's "higher education".
The back shows the familiar Arbuckles' factory scene with buildings, dock, railroad cars, and a ship.

DATE: Undated (but probably 1888 or 1889)
LITHOGRAPHER: Not identified
CONDITION: Very fine, I'd say. This card is only very lightly soiled with just barely worn edges and corners. (Please see scans.)
