Victorian Trade Card - Arbuckle Brothers Coffee Company - "THE DAY AFTER THE CHILDREN'S PARTY" (#10)
SERIES: Satire
This is one of 100 cards featuring humorous cartoons and advertising the "Ariosa" brand of coffee that Arbuckles' issued in the late 1880s. All the illustrations were originally published in either Puck, Judge, or Texas Siftings, three of the more popular satirical periodicals of the day. Most typically aimed their derision at blacks, country "rubes", the Irish, or immigrants in general. This particular card was based on an 1887 Puck cartoon drawn by Frederick B. Opper and features a doctor dispensing medicine to some kids who obviously overindulged a a party the previous day.
The back features the familiar "Four Points" text.
SIZE: 3" x 5"
DATE: Undated (but probably 1888 or 1889)
LITHOGRAPHER: Not identified
CONDITION: Fine, I'd say. This card is only lightly soiled with just slightly worn edges and corners. At the very bottom on the back is a somewhat smudged area where it appears some writing has been erased. (Please see scans.)
MULTIPLE ITEM SHIPPING DISCOUNT: I will ship up to 4 cards for the single base shipping charge shown. For purchases of more than 4 cards, the shipping charge will increase by just a small increment for every 4 additional cards.
