Victorian Trade Card - Arbuckle Brothers Coffee Company - "A TOWN MALIGNED" (#5)
SERIES: Satire
This is one of 100 cards featuring humorous cartoons and advertising the "Ariosa" brand of coffee that Arbuckles' issued in the late 1880s. All the illustrations were originally published in either Puck, Judge, or Texas Siftings, three of the more popular satirical periodicals of the day. Most typically aimed their derision at blacks, the Irish, or, as in this case, country "rubes" (i.e., anybody outside New York City). This particular card was based on an 1888 Texas Siftings cartoon drawn by VerBeck and features a sharply dressed traveler with top hat and cane, being greeted at the railroad station by a local farmer and his dog.
The back carries Arbuckles' familiar "4 Points" sales pitch.

DATE: Undated (but probably 1888 or 1889)
LITHOGRAPHER: Not identified
CONDITION: Fine, I'd say. This card is only lightly soiled with barely "bumped" corners. (Please see scans.)

much going on."
NATIVE--"Well, I dunno 'bout that, mister. There's
a dog fight on fer to-night, an' we had three funerals
last week."
