Made from flax, the artist uses different color flax strings and waves them into beautiful Beijing Opera mask designs. This mask of Jiang Wei, one of the warriors from Three Kingdoms period (220~280), follows the traditional mask designs. The Yin and Yang diagram shows Jiang's intelligence as a military officer.
The facial makeups of Beijing opera are various designs of lines and colored patches painted on the faces of certain operatic characters. They follow traditionally fixed patterns for specific types to highlight the disposition and quality in the personages, so that the audience may immediately know whether they are heroes or villains, whether they are kind or treacherous and wicked. Yellow and white represent cunning, red stands for uprightness and loyalty, black means valor and wisdom, blue and green indicate the vigorous and enterprising character of rebellious heroes and golden and silver represent mystic or super-natural power.
