1983's TRACK RECORD summarizes six of Joan Armatrading's previous albums. That Armatrading's U.S. following never broke much beyond a sizable cult is no fault of her music; the singles and album tracks collected here are uniformly excellent. The reggaefied "Drop the Pilot" is her biggest U.S. hit, but tunes like the ultra-melodic "Me Myself I" and the emotionally tricky "I Love It When You Call Me Names" (which is powered by a screaming Adrian Belew guitar solo) are every bit its equal. Softer songs like "Show Some Emotion" and "The Weakness In Me" show off the West Indian-born singer's folk roots. Overall, a fine precis of her late-'70s/early-'80s work.
