Album notes
The Royal We: Roxanne Clifford (vocals, guitar, ukulele); Patrick Doyle (vocals, guitar, organ); Jihae Simmons (vocals); Joan Sweeney (violin); Graeme J.D. Ronald (bass guitar); Colin Kearney (drums).
Audio Mixer: Steven Ward.
Snotty but sensitive, THE ROYAL WE is this Glasgow's band first full-length, and it honors the city's indie trailblazers, from Orange Juice and the Vaselines to Belle and Sebastian. The style of the album is somewhat hard to place, but a sure-footed pop sensibility anchors the songs throughout. The band's insouciant attitude comes through on the satirical "I Hate Rock 'n' Roll." The sloppy guitars of "Three is a Crowd" come from '90s American indie rock, while the herky-jerky "All the Rage" nods more to English post-punk. A gal named Joanie Come Lately plays the violin; instead of adding an orchestral vibe, it only contributes to the band's offbeat, slanted appeal.
