19c Mourning Brooch Pendant Silver Handpainted Flowers
Estate Sale Find: Mourning jewelry silver brooch Victorian circa 1800's, from the period when Queen Victoria was in deep mourning for the lost of her husband Prince Albert. Due to her deep state of mourning after her dear Albert's death there was great compassion by the people. The English women in sympathy for their queen began wearing this jewelry. Thus the popular inception of commemorating a loved one by wearing memorial jewelry. This brooch is 800 silver, I was told the top is glass and the C catch has been reinforced sometime in the past 75 years with a flip or twist-over. The pin is almost 1 1/2" by 1", oval. The bezel brooch is surrounded by a scrolling braided rope border. The inset is handpainted flowers but a favorite photo or hair of a loved one can be put inside by removing the backing as you would do in most photo frames. The pin, brooch, pendant comes in the antique four way closing leather snap case with purple velvet pillow center.
