Zahara Schatz (1916-1999) Painter and Sculptor. Born in Jerusalem to Professor Boris Schatz, founder of the “Bezalel” Art School in Jerusalem, and Dr. Olga Pavzner, an art critic. She studied art in “Bezalel” and in Paris, and was an art teacher in both Israel and the USA. She served as an advisor on industrial design to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. Zahara created abstract works in metals, plastics and other unorthodox materials. She was also a lamp and jewelry designer. Among her most outstanding works is a symbolic Menorah for the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial in Jerusalem. Her sculptures and decorative works are featured at sites throughout Jerusalem. She was an Israel Prize laureate for art in 1954, won the Dizengoff Prize for sculpture, the Yad Vashem prize, the New York Museum of Modern Art prize, was awarded the “Yakirat Bezalel” prize and many others. Zahara participated in many exhibitions in distinguished and important galleries and museums in Israel, the USA and Europe. Zahara Schatz was the last of the Schatz dynasty. She passed away in Jerusalem in 1999 at the age of 83, after a long illness.
