Acer negundo, commonly known as boxelder or box elder maple, is a fast-growing deciduous tree native to North America, particularly widespread in river valleys, floodplains, and disturbed habitats. Unlike most maples, it typically has compound leaves with three to seven leaflets, giving it a somewhat ash-like appearance. The tree can grow up to 30–50 feet tall, with a broad, irregular crown and soft, greenish-gray bark that becomes furrowed with age. It is dioecious, meaning male and female flowers occur on separate trees, and its wind-pollinated flowers emerge in early spring before the leaves. Female trees produce paired winged seeds called samaras, which are dispersed by wind and can germinate readily in a variety of soils. Acer negundo is highly adaptable, tolerant of drought, urban pollution, and a wide range of soil conditions, making it a common choice for shelterbelts and erosion control.
