Silphium laciniatum, commonly known as compass plant, is a perennial native to the tallgrass prairies of central North America, valued both for its ecological role and its distinctive appearance. Belonging to the aster family (Asteraceae), this robust plant can reach heights of 6 to 9 feet, with deeply lobed, coarse, sandpapery leaves that are often oriented north to south, a unique adaptation believed to reduce heat stress by minimizing direct sun exposure—a trait that inspired its common name.
