In the early 20th century, in a poor small village in Kofu, Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan, a curious young girl named Hanako Ando (played by Nozomi Yamada) lives there. Her father, Kippei (played by Takeshi Ihara), a former traveling merchant who is knowledgeable about the world, insists on providing Hanako with an education and goes to great lengths to send his daughter to Shuho Girls' School in Tokyo. From her initial naive resistance to fully enjoying the wealth of knowledge, in just a few years, Hanako (played by Yuriko Yoshitaka) grows into a modern knowledgeable woman fluent in English. Surrounded by her roommate Ayako Daigo (played by Rin Takahashi), dorm supervisor Motoki (played by Miyoko Asada), and teacher Tomiyama (played by Rie Tomosaka), Hanako experiences a happy growth and forms a lifelong close friendship with transfer student Renko Hayama (played by Yukie Nakama), who has had a difficult emotional past. Passing through the turbulent eras of Meiji, Taisho, and Showa, the destinies of everyone around her are influenced by the waves of the times, and Hanako herself embarks on an extraordinary life journey…
