DESCRIPTIONVetiveria zizanioides, also known as the vetiver grass, is a native plant of Asia. It has been introduced into the tropics of both hemispheres; it has escaped cultivation and become a weed in some regions. The thin leaves are evergreen, long and linear, with serrated edges and a smooth surface. The stems are erect, rigid and brown-purple in colour. Small brown-purple flowers appear in long spikes at the ends of these stems over several months of the year (September to April). The leaves die off after flowering but new shoots grow from root buds that mark the end of winter and spring (March/April). The fragrant roots grow downward in the soil and can attain depths of more than 3 metres (10 feet).
