The Hawaiian Palm (Brighamia insignis) can only be found in the wild on the Hawaiian island of Kauai. It has become nearly extinct and despite the difficulties of natural cultivation in the wild, it can be commercially produced through seed and tissue culture. Ours are grown from tissue culture. With proper care the Brighamia can produce yellow star-shaped flowers that can last up to several weeks. The leaves will fall off once a year and will leave scarring on the trunk which shows the new growth. A new canopy will soon start to bud. With soft green leaves and a patterned trunk, they are both sculptural and decorative. In the Spring and Summer these palms sprout pale yellow flowers that smell like honeysuckle. These palms are relatively easy to take care of. Hawaiian Palms are not technically palms, but a member of the bellflower family. Their unusual appearance is due in large part to their having evolved in relation to a single type of hawk moth. Commonly known as ʻŌlulu or Alula in Hawaiian, or colloquially as the Vulcan palm or Cabbage on a Stick. Take care not to over-water; once a week is fine, and check the soil is dry before watering and if the soil is still moist, you could even skip a week. Hawaiian Palm is a succulent and therefore needs very little water - too much could kill it. Hawaiian Palm likes constant bright, indirect light, away from drafts or heat sources like radiators. This plant does best in indirect light, so we wouldn’t advise sitting it on a south-facing windowsill. In winter it will thank you for a little more light, so you can move it to a brighter position then.
