Medico sativa
Lucerne, also known as alfalfa and botanically known as Medico sativa, is an excellent green manure crop in the garden.Lucerne has much deeper roots than vegetable plants. It taps into, and makes available, the nutrients and water that vegetables can't access. Dig in at 13 weeks or cut down when it starts to flower for use as mulch in your garden.
Requires well-drained, fertile soil. Avoid acidic soils or prepare with dolomite.
The soil also needs to be at least moderately well drained as it resents waterlogging.
Good drought tolerance once established.
Attracts beneficial bees and insects.
Good forage and ground cover.
Adds nitrogen and organic matter to soil.
Sowing guide
Sow in moist soil
Sub-tropical regions: Sow in late Autumn to early July.
Temperate/Cool regions: Sow in Autumn - Spring.
