Irene Herbert's was one of a handful of elegant couture ladies' shops in Tulsa during the oil capital days. This dress is an excellent representative of their work.
After failing to find anything but the IH label in this dress, I looked into the construction...after checking the quality of the workmanship, I believe this was a custom made piece. The finishing details even on the inside speak of careful craftsmanship.
It is done in a lovely beige linen with a bonded backing in an A-line style, probably from the late 1960's or a bit later (Irene Herbert's closed in the 70's, so that pinpoints a little.) It is neatly trimmed at the neckline, arms, and edges of two front hipline pockets with navy linen. A knife pleat below each pocket gives a bit of flare. The navy linen belt has a unique touch in its clasp. It has a long plastic zipper up the back.
The back of the belt is stamped as a 10. It measures 19" across the bustline lying flat, about 16-1/2" through the waist, and 20" across the hips (about midpocket). It measures 37" from the top of the zipper to the hem in back. (This was an era of shorter skirts.)
It has been well cared for and actually looks brand new. Whether this is a case of a missing label or a custom creation, it is a lovely dress, simple, in a style that could go anywhere for any occasion and look perfect. It still can!
