The tender round leaves are purplish red top side and green with red veins underneath on upright bright green stems. Easy to harvest as cut and come again. Sow from spring through to early autumn for continuous harvest maturing in 21-40 days. A small number of plants may have green leaves. Maturity 60 days from direct sowing.
Komatsuna gets its name from the Komatsugawa district, which includes Edogawa, Katsushika and Adachi wards. Tokyo was the second-largest regional producer of komatsuna in 2004. It is also called spinach mustard, Komatsuna has dark red leaves that are rich in calcium and often quite glossy. They can be harvested at any stage and prepared like spinach in the early stages and more like cabbage as they mature.
