SERIES: Satire

This is one of 100 cards featuring humorous cartoons and advertising the "Ariosa" brand of coffee that Arbuckles' issued in the late 1880s. All the illustrations were originally published in either Puck, Judge, or Texas Siftings, three of the more popular satirical periodicals of the day. Most typically aimed their derision at blacks, country "rubes", the Irish, or, as in this case, idle schemers. This particular card was based on an 1888 Puck cartoon drawn by L. Dalrymple and features a recently divorced actor regretting his loss of income (from his ex-wife's employment, that is).

The back features the familiar "Four Points" text.

SIZE: 5" x 3"

DATE: Undated (but probably 1888 or 1889)

LITHOGRAPHER: Not identified

CONDITION: Very fine, I'd say. The card is very clean with only minimal wear to the edges and corners. The upper right corner appears to be faintly discolored and there's some mild rippling along the left edge. (Please see scans.)

MULTIPLE ITEM SHIPPING DISCOUNT: I will ship up to 4 cards for the single base shipping charge shown. For purchases of more than 4 cards, the shipping charge will increase by just a small increment for every 4 additional cards.

WISDOM THAT COMES TOO LATE.

STRANDED ACTOR (on the Rialto)--"What an infernal
idiot I was to get that divorce from Esmeralda last
month! She's making a cool fifty dollars a week now,
and won't look at me!

From Puck, by permission.
