SERIES: Satire

This is one of 100 cards featuring humorous cartoons and advertising the "Ariosa" brand of coffee that Arbuckles' issued in the late 1880s. All the illustrations were originally published in either Puck, Judge, or Texas Siftings, three of the more popular satirical periodicals of the day. Most typically aimed their derision at blacks, country "rubes", the Irish, or the fundamentally clueless. This particular card was based on an 1887 Puck cartoon drawn by L. Dalrymple and features a woman and her husband, who's more used to being at a theater than a church.

The back carries Arbuckles' familiar "Four Points" sales pitch.

SIZE: 5" x 3"

DATE: Undated (but probably 1888 or 1889)

LITHOGRAPHER: Not identified

CONDITION: Good to very good, I'd say. The card is generally only lightly soiled but does have a somewhat dirty area with a water spot just over the woman's head. The edges and corners are just slightly worn. (Please see scans.)

MULTIPLE ITEM SHIPPING DISCOUNT: I will ship up to 4 cards for the single base shipping charge shown. For purchases of more than 4 cards, the shipping charge will increase by just a small increment for every 4 additional cards.

BETWEEN THE ACTS OF THE APOSTLES

An absent-minded husband, who hadn't been to
church for a long time, reached for his hat as the choir
ceased singing and a momentary lull took place, when
his wife whispered:
"What are you doing, John?"
"I'm just going out to see a man." he said.

From Puck, by permission.
