Victorian Trade Card - Arbuckle Brothers Coffee Company - "A POLITE THUNDERBOLT" (#47)
SERIES: Satire
This is one of 100 cards featuring humorous cartoons and advertising the "Ariosa" brand of coffee that Arbuckles' issued in the late 1880s. All the illustrations were originally published in either Puck, Judge, or Texas Siftings, three of the more popular satirical periodicals of the day. Most typically aimed their derision at blacks, country "rubes", or the Irish. This particular card was based on an 1887 Puck cartoon and features a couple out for a stroll, who appear to have somewhat differing opinions concerning the lady's level of attractiveness.
The back shows the Arbuckles' factory buildings, dock, railroad cars, and a ship.
SIZE: 5" x 3"
DATE: Undated (but probably 1888 or 1889)
LITHOGRAPHER: Not identified
CONDITION: Very good, I'd say. This card is only lightly soiled, with slightly worn edges and corners. There's a short crease in the bottom center portion of the card, through the dialogue area. (Please see scans.)
