VAN LECKWYCK & CO. (Rotterdam) Victorian Trade Card - Switzerland / Suisse - Sports & Pastimes
Victorian Trade Card - VAN LECKWYCK & Co., Rotterdam
Colorful Dutch card depicting a few of the leisure activities found in Switzerland ("Zwitserland"). This design is essentially the same as the one used in the "Sports & Pastimes of All Nations" series issued by the Arbuckle Bros. Coffee Co. in 1893 (reputedly drawn by Frances Brundage, but not signed). It shows St. Bernard dogs rescuing a snow-covered traveler and a couple of hunters chasing an elusive chamois.
The back carries advertising text for Van Leckwyck's roasted coffies and shows their trademark, "DE ROODE PELIKAAN" (the red pelican).
Size: 5" x 3"
Date: Not specifically dated, but the advertising refers to awards received in 1894 and 1897, so the card had to have been issued later than that.
Lithographer: Not identified.
Condition: Good, I'd say. This card is generally only lightly soiled, but does have purple rubber-stamped advertising on both front (rather faint) and back (quite obvious). The edges and corners are only slightly worn. The back has several round patches of glue residue, a few of which also encompass areas of surface paper loss. (Please see scans.)
MULTIPLE ITEM SHIPPING DISCOUNT: I will ship up to 4 cards for the single base shipping charge shown. For purchases of more than 4 cards, the shipping charge will increase by just a small increment for every 4 additional cards.
