Held horizontally, both heads are played with beaters. The dhol is used in folk music from the Northern Indian States - primarily Punjab. It provides the percussion for the popular Punjabi folk dance called the Bhangra; which has now gained popularity across India, and also in the west.The shells are manufactured in the northern Indian State of Uttar Pradesh. Locally grown mango wood is used. After transporting to Punjab, the shells are professionally checked, levelled and polished. One goat skin and one synthetic heads are fitted to these drum shells.
