Its predecessor in Sikh devotional practice was thepakhawaj, the pre-eminent barrel drum of the Indo-Persian courts and ofcontemporary dhrupad music. During Arjan’s time, the jori became a specialty ofpractitioners of gurbani kirtan in the city of Amritsar, which by 1604 hadbecome the capital of Sikh devotionalism. According to Bhai Baldeep Singh’sresearch, the distinctive sound of the jori became associated with the city andbecame known as the Amritsari baaj, the musical style of Amritsar. This stylehas now been all but forgotten and his project is to revive its structures,instruments, and sounds.The left-hand drum, the dhamma, is larger, much heavier and taller, and isfashioned more like an oversized tabla than like the modern bayan of the tablapair.The dhamma produced deeper base sounds that are strong, expansive andresonating, unequaled by any other Indian drum.
