  • Description
Authentically signed items from former Georgia Governor George Busbee (1929-2004) and Susan S. Clough (1945-). They date from 1975.

George Busbee followed Jimmy Carter as governor of Georgia, serving from 1975-83. In the disputed 1966 gubernatorial election in Georgia, Busbee was one of 30 Democrats in the legislature who voted for Republican Howard Callaway over segregationist and fellow Democrat Lester Maddox. Maddox was awarded the governorship anyway in a 182-66 vote differential.

Susan Clough became a member of then-Georgia Governor Jimmy Carter's staff in 1971, serving as an assistant to press chief Jody Powell. She then became Carter's personal secretary and later worked for Carter's successor, George Busbee. When Carter was elected President, he asked her to come to Washington, where she became his trusted personal assistant and secretary.

Light brown 3 1/2 x 10 1/2-inch cloth square is boldly signed in black ink: "George Busbee, Governor of Georgia, 1975." A letter on the Office of the Governor stationery dated December 16, 1975, accompanies the piece in which Busbee gives his favorite prayer. It's signed in black ink: "Susan Clough."

Everything here is in crisp, near mint condition. A nice piece of Georgia political history.

This item comes directly from the estate of Charles "Chaw" Mank Jr. (1902-1985), noted songwriter, author, bandleader, record producer, sheet music publisher, psychic, radio personality, silent movie theater organist, world champion pen pal, inveterate collector and Hollywood/music fan club pioneer.
