Description:
This popular passion flower has creamy-white flowers with purple-blue zoned coronas. It is an extremely fast growing vine that can grow up to 30ft a season. The attractive foliage is 10cm (4in) across, glossy green and very deeply lobed. Plants make rapid annual growth each year as this clings with tendrils, plants won't damage brickwork or fences but need suitable supports to grow on. Passion flower is in bloom from mid- to late summer and, after a warm summer, it is not unusual to find large orange-yellow fruits forming. These can be left on the plants for decoration. They are edible but do not have an outstanding flavour. The Royal Horticultural Society has given it its prestigious Award of Garden Merit (AGM).
Hardiness:
This is one of the hardiest passion flowers, dying back in colder climates but hardy to 10F. It will re-grow from roots the following year. In warmer climates without much frost, the vine will grow and bloom throughout the year.
Growing Environment:
Likes lots of water, moist soil, and prefers a humid environment but will tolerate almost anything outside of desert conditions. Easy to grow in a container or the ground, but support must be provided.
Ripe Fruits
Uses:
Fruit is eaten fresh or used in drinks. A tea is sometimes made of the flower and is said to alleviate stress and anxiety.
Native Range
Wild range extends throughout Central and South America and as far north as the Southern United States but has naturalized in many parts of the world.
