Blondie is an old time radio show based on the popular Chic Young comic strip. This old time radio adaptation does a fantastic job of recreating the "essence" of the main charaacters. Penny Singleton, and Arthur Lake do a perfect job with Blondie and Dagwood Bumstead.
Before Singleton and Lake brought Blondie to life on old time radio, they had made the feature film, Blondie. The film was the introduction that they needed to reprise their roles on The Pepsodent Show, starring Bob Hope. The appearance on Bob Hope's show clinched Blondie a spot as the summer replacement for The Eddie Cantor Show in 1939. Eddie Cantor decided not to resume his show in the fall, so the sponsor, R.J. Reynolds (Camel Cigarettes) decided to keep Blondie going in it's place. Thus began the long and tumultuous ride of Blondie as an old time radio sit-com.
The old time radio show is just like the comic, Dagwood always getting yelled at by his boss, Mr. Dithers. Blondie always standing by her man. And Dagwood, always thinking about taking a snooze somewhere after he had finished one of his gargantuan sandwiches. Blondie old time radio lasted from 1939 till 1950, although it was a bumpy ride, going on different networks, different sponsors, etc. It's just a testament to how well liked the characters were, and how well Lake, Singleton, and later actresses that played Blondie, which at one time was played by Arthur Lake's real wife.
At the same time that the old time radio version of Blondie was laying, there were 28 low budget movies made, using the same characters and comedy. In 1950 though, it all came to an end. The same year the movies ended, so did the now famous old time radio version. In both 1957 and 1968 there was an attempt to revive Blondie as a TV show, but each attempt only lasted one year, and the show was not very well thought of either time.
It's hard to say why the comic strip, and old time radio version of Blondie were so popular. Comedy was perhaps the easiest type of show to produce for movies or TV, but they couldn't match the magic created by this crazy couple when on old time radio.
Again, for the most part, the radio show stayed true to the comics, although the children didn't have as much exposure. When you listen to the radio version, sometimes it's hard to tell they even had kids.
All the characters here make up a wonderful show. Just wish there were more of them that made it through! This great MP3 set has 36 episodes, each about 25 minutes long. If you like old time radio comedy or sit-coms, this is for you.
