Bulldog Drummond is an old time radio show using the character created from the the H.C. McNeile books. The stories followed Captain Hugh "Bulldog" Drummond, D.S.O., M.C., a wealthy former WWI officer of the Loamshire Regiment, who, after the war, spends his new-found leisure time as a private detective.
World War I was over, and Drummond now needed something exciting to do after the war. What better occupation than to be a private detective? During the time period that Bulldog Drummond aired (1941-1954) there was no shortage of private detectives on old time radio. But Drummond wasn't what American listeners were used to at the time. Drummond was as hard boiled as they came, but it was a nice change of pace to have an old time radio PI who had a 'Gentleman's Gentleman', and some of the other things that a civilized PI should have! Please take note though that even though Bulldog Drummond was an Englishman, the old time radio version had him transplanted here in the US, New York style!
The scripts used in this old time radio show were well written and tight. Sometimes it's hard to tell a story well in a 25 minute time slot, but the scriptwriters did a great job of that. The original Bulldog Drummond was loosely based on real life Gerard Fairlie, who after McNeile's death, continued writing the very popular Bulldog Drummond Books.
Many of the episodes were typical old time radio PI work, but many also dealt with security and espionage. And the creator of the James Bond series, Ian Fleming admitted that Bulldog Drummond was an influence in the creation of James Bond.
In addition to the old time radio show, there were numerous Bulldog Drummond movies produced, some of which starred Ray Milland and Ronald Colman.
Bulldog Drummond will appeal to a wide variety of old time radio listeners, whether you like hard boiled PI's, spies, or just plain action shows, this is for you. One nice thing about an old time radio series like Bulldog Drummond is you get a variety of plot lines in a series, i.e., not all episodes are about murder, etc. Bulldog Drummond really mixes it up.
There are 26 episodes on one MP3 CD.
