Hawk Larabee is an old time radio western drama that originally started out as Hawk Durango. Airing on CBS it was one of the first of the 'adult' version of old time radio westerns. It predated the most famous of all old time radio westerns, Gunsmoke, by about 6 years. A good show, it just wasn't up to the standards of the competing crop of other old time radio shows in that genre.
Taking place in 1840s Texas, when the west was still untamed, Hawk Larabee used traditional and often used story lines, such as cattle rustlers, poachers, etc. The series started withBarton Yarborough playing Hawk Durango, then quickly veteran old time radio actor Elliot Lewis took the role over as Hawk Larabee.
The show virtually died on the vine though. We've tried to do a little research why the show ended so quickly, as Hawk Larabee may not be the best western show on old time radio, it certainly wasn't the worst either. You can listen to the sample episode and see that it was a pretty decent show. More than likely it was a sustained show, meaning that CBS would foot the bill, until a major nationwide sponsor was found. This happened quite a bit back then, and some networks would get nervous fast, and pull the plug, but, that's only a guess.
So if you're a fan of old time radio westerns, especially series where there's not just black andwhite hats, but a few gray ones as well, here's one for you, short and sweet at 8 episodes. Each episode is about a half hour long. On a few of them the lead in music is in there, and it's great old time western style music!
