  • Description
This small soft cover book is of historical importance to anyone interested in the history of food preparation and presentation in the early 20th century. It contains more than 250 choice recipes compiled especially for customers and friends of the Larkin Co. by the Larkin Kitchen Laboratory department. This is the 7th edition, revised in 1909. The first book was copyrighted in 1906. The book has 78 pages and index.

This book reminds me of a precurser of The Joy of Cooking or The Art of French Cooking as it gives general information about the ingredients, how to prepare and how to serve them. The pages are decorated with small icons of Lark products as well as numerous illustrations of the dishes. The recipes are very simple. Not too many readers would have had ice boxes, least of all the modern gadgets of today.

Other helpful information includes how to set up a diningroom, set a table and care for silver, etc. This is an interesting little book especially for modern chefs and home economists.

The Larkin Co. Pure Food Specialists was established in 1875. The original company sold soap and were the originators of loyalty programs and gifts with purchase. Interestingly in todays terms the gifts were more valuable than the purchase. For example the purchase of a case of soap entitled you to a free desk. Oh how times have changed. Today you might get a bar of soap of you bought a desk.

Condition is intact. What can I say? It is a soft cover cookbook over 100 years of age. It has numerous spatters and it looks like someone loaned it to a toddler. Lots of extraneous scribble in faded pencil. The book is totally readable however. The cover is printed cloth over paper so it is sturdier than it would have been had it been only paper.
