❖ About Aburatorigami
The story of Aburatorigami begins in the opulence and glitter of Kyoto over one thousand years ago.
Back then, gold leaves were extensively used for decorating temples and making furnishings and crafts.
Goldsmiths used thin pieces of paper to keep their gold sheets separated. The sheets were then repeatedly hammered to turn them into super-thin leaves. After that, they reused the pieces of paper for packaging the gold leaves to be shipped to Kyoto.
A few noble ladies (who did not like to throw things away!) took notice of the exceptional smoothness of the paper and tried using it to remove excess oil from their faces. And it worked!
Word spread through Kyoto, and Aburatorigami was born. Its fabrication and use have stayed virtually unchanged for over a thousand years.
Lady Butterfly is made by stacking alternate sheets of Abaca paper and gold and hammering the stack in a manual press more than 50,000 times (compared to less than 3,000 for most other blotting papers.)
The result is a super-smooth and highly absorbent sheet of beautiful paper, thinner than 1/2 the thickness of human hair.
