It is a typical hybrid art from Gandhara, which was firstdescribed by Alfred Foucher as “Greco-Buddhist”. This sculpture isHellenistic in style with local Gandharan flavor added in the facialfeatures. Gandharan sculptures were heavily influenced by the artistictraditions of the Hellenistic world, most probably as a result of Alexanderthe Great’s colony in Bactria(WesternAfghanistan). The juxtaposition of distinctly Westernclassical features, such as the realistic and rigid rendering of the drapery, with the stylized indigenous treatment of the face and body, typifiesGandharan sculptures. Alexander the Great, the Greek conqueror and King of Macedon, who invaded Indiain 326 B.C.E. When he left India,Greek artisans settled in North India and Pakistan and possibly influencedthe first known anthropoid images of the Buddha, which developed into theGandhara style of Buddhist art.
