At first glance, Eating Pavlova would seem to be a novel about psychology and the nature of psychoanalysis: why else tell it through the consciousness of Sigmund Freud, as he is waiting for death to take him? And yet, this engrossing novel is about much more. In recounting his life, and in trying to understand his own dreams, Freud must consider the impact he's left upon the world, through his theories of the mind, of course, but also in the person of his daughter, Anna, who nurses him in his last days. The novel also contains a number of metafictional and metabiographical (if such a term exists) twists to it, as the nature of story and biography is delved into, with Freud the person fighting for a place among the writings of Freud the intellectual. An engaging, many-layered novel. Brian McCombie
