This is anORIGINAL CASTING MOLDFOR THETHIS AD MAT ISFROM THE 1946 FILM"THE VIRGINIAN"The mold reads: "THE FIGHTIN' WEST OF OLD...FILMED IN TECHNICOLOR!....JOEL McCREA...BRIAN DONLEVY...SONNY TUFTS....BARBARA BRITTON...THE VIRGINIANThemold measures aprox.4 3/4" X4 1/2". It is inMINT UNUSED CONDITION! These molds are great conversationpieces and they are RARE as the dickens! This would look outstandingframed in a shadowbox type frame. Again these are composed of a Wood Fiber....Please don't expect something made out of metal!Owen Wister's 1902 novel was made into a movie several times, most notably in 1929, with Gary Cooper starring. This 1946 remake of the often-filmed saga gave Joel McCrea the title role as the standing-tall cowboy in Wyoming. The Virginian and his best friend Steve (Sonny Tufts) are rivals for the affections of Molly Wood (Barbara Britton), a schoolteacher who has migrated from the East and finds herself intimidated by the rough morality of the West. Steve is after a quick buck and hooks up with a nefarious cattle rustler, Trampas (Brian Donlevy). The Virginian warns his friend not to take up the life of crime, but to no avail. Much gunplay ensues. ~ Michael Betzold, All Movie GuideThese "WOOD AD MATS" are really Molds/Lead Forms that wereintended to have molten lead poured into to them create castings, andthen discarded. This was the way that Newspaper ads, press book Ad Matsand various publications were produced up until the mid 1960's. Mostnewspapers were done via letterpress printing and utilized what iscalled hot type. The lead was melted and then used to type out wordsand imprint pictures. Pictures were usually in the form of one of thesemolds, which is composed of a wood fiber material specially, designedto accept the molten lead. Once cooled the casting was secured in thedesired position in the letterpress, inked and paper placed on top ofthe lead casting. The press was then brought down under pressure and'whala' a spiffy movie ad for a film coming to a theater near you!Electronic typesetting made this process obsolete over 40 years ago!Today's computers and technology make this process extremely efficient.The Extremely Fine artwork in this is just incredible!
