Largely new material, except for the traditional encore of "Matilda," "Jamaica Farewell," and "The Banana Boat Song (Day-O)," AN EVENING WITH HARRY BELAFONTE AND FRIENDS focuses on the world music aspects of Belafonte's music, with two songs featuring the African pop singer Richard Bona. Belafonte's vocals, while in a lower register than in his late '50s heyday, are as supple and elastic as ever, and the arrangements, though they still Americanize a fair amount, are more traditional than on his pure-pop early albums. This is Belafonte's best work, and it's still delightful.
