SERIES: Satire

This is one of 100 cards featuring humorous cartoons and advertising the "Ariosa" brand of coffee that Arbuckles' issued in the late 1880s. All the illustrations were originally published in either Puck, Judge, or Texas Siftings, three of the more popular satirical periodicals of the day. Most tended to aim their derision at blacks, Jews, the Irish, country "rubes", or even the "leisure class". This particular card was based on an 1888 Texas Siftings cartoon drawn by D. McCarthy and features a portly gentleman suggesting that a painting of a pig needs to be a bit more hefty.

The back carries Arbuckles' familiar "4 Points" sales pitch.

SIZE: 5" x 3"

DATE: Undated (but probably 1888 or 1889)

LITHOGRAPHER: Not identified

CONDITION: Very good+, I'd say. This card is only lightly soiled with slightly worn edges and rounded corners. (Please see scans.)

MULTIPLE ITEM SHIPPING DISCOUNT: I will ship up to 4 cards for the single base shipping charge shown. For purchases of more than 4 cards, the shipping charge will increase by just a small increment for every 4 additional cards.

IT'S SINGLE DEFECT

MR. PORCINE (to Chicago art dealer)--"I like the
picture pretty well, 'cept for one thing."

DEALER--"what is it's defect, sir?"

"'Taint painted heavy enough. If you can have the
feller what done it put another coat on I'll take it."

From Texas Siftings, by permission.
