Victorian Trade Card - Arbuckle Brothers Coffee Company - "IRONY" (#26)
SERIES: Satire
This is one of 100 cards featuring humorous cartoons and advertising the "Ariosa" brand of coffee that Arbuckles' issued in the late 1880s. All the illustrations were originally published in either Puck, Judge, or Texas Siftings, three of the more popular satirical periodicals of the day. Most typically aimed their derision at blacks, country "rubes", the Irish, or idle schemers. This particular card was based on an 1887 Judge cartoon drawn by Albert Dodd Blashfield and features a rather relentless vendor on a train.
The back features Arbuckles' familiar "Four Points" sales pitch.
SIZE: 5" x 3"
DATE: Undated (but probably 1888 or 1889)
LITHOGRAPHER: Not identified
CONDITION: Very good+, I'd say. This card is only very lightly soiled with just slightly worn corners, but does have a large diagonal crease across the lower right corner. (Please see scans.)
MULTIPLE ITEM SHIPPING DISCOUNT: I will ship up to 4 cards for the single base shipping charge shown. For purchases of more than 4 cards, the shipping charge will increase by just a small increment for every 4 additional cards.
