On August 18, 1864, the first railway post office in the United Staters was established on the Chicago and Northwestern Railway from Chicago to Clinton, Iowa. Col. George B. Armstrong suggested the plan of a *post office on wheels* which provided for the sorting of mail in transit by clerks assigned to cars supplied with equipment of a suitable character. The experiment proved a success and the system, which was soon adopted by all leading railways, greatly simplified and expedited the U.S. Mail Service. On September 16, 1875, the fast mail service was inaugurated, the first fast mail train being run between New York and Chicago.
