VINTAGE TURKISH POSTAGE STAMP
Out of circulation. Single stamp
20 Lira (old Turkish Lira which is currently out of circulation) stamp printed in 1981 by Guzel Sanatlar Matbaasi (Fine Arts Printingpress) in honor of 1981 International Year of Disabled Persons declared as such by United Nations. Depicting a figure in a wheelchair in tones of purple and pink.
The Year Of Disabled Persons called for a plan of action with an emphasis on equalization of opportunities, rehabilitation and prevention of disabilities. The theme of IYDP was "full participation and equality," defined as the right of persons with disabilities to take part fully in the life and development of their societies, enjoy living conditions equal to those of other citizens, and have an equal share in improved conditions resulting from socio-economic development.
The +2 1/2 that can be seen next to postage amount is the quantity that gets donated to humanitarian and social aid. This kind of stamp is called an added value stamp and the Turkish Postal Services printed and provided such stamps twice a year. The amount collected in addition was donated completely usually to Turkish Child Protection Services and the Turkish Red Crescent. However in this case it might have been donated for the benefit of disabled people.
