This is a totally entrance-making gown! It came from the estate of a woman who had impeccable taste. The labels in her closet showed that she bought from the finest stores in our area. I'm guessing that this dress comes from the '60's because of its figure skimming lines.
From the incomparable Emma Domb, this special occasion gown is styled with a fitted bodice that dips slightly in the back and curves upward across the upper bust in front. The long skirt is fashioned with what might be called an apron that is banded with what I think might be the reverse of the fabric...it has more sheen. Underneath the apron Emma used the same lightweight fabric that the dress is lined with so that there is no extra "bulk". Thoughtful touch! The bow that accents the apron at the back bodice has streamers that flow to the hem...another touch to give movement when walking.
The sleeves are also a unique touch. Done in both the front and reverse of the fabric they give a 3 layered look...another subtle touch! The simplicity of this style gives such an understated elegance to the entire gown while capturing really unusual touches.
I've had a hard time deciding what this luxurious fabric is...I'm going to refer to it as a silk worsted, a fabric with definite body. There is enough body in this fabric to make the dress hang exactly as it should.
The dress measures about 18" across the front bust lying flat, about 20" at the hipline and 56" in length measuring from the shoulder seam. It is in excellent condition save for one faint mark on the left back hipline...it looks like a pencil mark. I prefer to let the new owner have it cleaned...the mark should be addressed by an expert to keep the fabric from spotting.
This is a totally a timeless gown...a timeless beautiful gown...totally serene, and totally elegant!
