Jasper is an opaque gemstone which comes in a wide variety of colors and patterns. It is cousin to amethyst, citrine, rock crystal, smoky quartz, aventurine, chrysoprase, onyx, carnelian and agate.
Jasper is a birthstone for March. Red jasper, yellow jasper and green jasper were three of the stones in the High Priest’s Breastplate. It was the first Foundation Stone in Revelations. Jasper is the Talismanic Gem for those born in February and is associated with St. Peter. It is the Gem of the Hour for 10 p.m. and is the Name-Gem for Jasper and Jessie. It is under the influence of Venus and Mercury and associated with Libra and Spica Virginis.
Uses and Beliefs Ancient and Modern: Jasper has been used for jewelry and amulets all over the world for thousands of years. It was mentioned in writings as far back as 1500 B. C. and comes in a wide variety of colors and patterns. Bartolomaeus Anglicus stated that Jasper “hath as many vertues as dyvers coloures and veines.” The ancient Greeks and Romans used it in religious rituals. The ancient Egyptians used it for cylinder-seals, believed that green Jasper possessed exceptional virtues as an amulet and associated red Jasper with the blood of Isis. Greenish Jasper denotes satisfaction. Jasper was also used to heal one who was possessed of a devil or insane, and believed to drive away night spirits, protect from the bite of venomous creatures and draw the poison from snake bites, help during pregnancy and staunch bleeding. Green Jasper was used to make rain, aid the stomach and navel, and was highly valued for talismanic and therapeutic qualities by the ancients. To dream of Jasper signifies returned love.
Jasper has a calm and soothing energy which can assist you in sleeping and dreaming, grounding you to earth, and settling the stomach and nerves. Dalmatian Jasper connects you with the animal kingdom and Mother Earth. Red Jasper is excellent for grounding, soothing the digestion and monthly pain, and orange-red Jasper helps in creative projects of any kind.
