A solo album by Boss Hog's statuesque drummer, Hollis Queens, Kind of Like a Feel Good Thing predates the White Stripes and the Black Keys by a few years, but it has a very similar lo-fi garage-blues raunch feel. Some songs — for instance, the slinky and organ-enhanced "Vapor," with its whispery vocal — flirt a bit with retro-pop, but for the most part, Queens brays in a gloriously unschooled whine over skeletal drums, occasional bass, and her own unschooled guitar. On songs like "Man Sadness" and the Teenage Jesus & the Jerks-like "Poor Harvey," the combination works, but there are more than a few songs here that sound like half-written scraps caught on a cheap tape recorder during a particularly chaotic rehearsal. Elements of the early Slits, Free Kitten, the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, and Boss Hog themselves crop up here, but a lot of Kind of Like a Feel Good Thing will try the patience of all but the most devoted slop-rock fan.
