Some will want to forge ahead and avoid sounding like their parents; others will be unapologetically retro and go out of their way to emulate what transpired in the past. The Strawberry Zots clearly fell into the latter category; their first album, Cars, Flowers, Telephones came out in 1989 but was meant to sound like it was recorded in the 1960s. Providing power pop, garage rock, and psychedelic pop/rock, the Albuquerque band isn't the least bit innovative -- this nostalgic CD was meant to be a throwback to the days of Tommy James & the Shondells, the Electric Prunes, the Zombies, and Friend & Lover, and the Zots are good at what they do. Original tunes like "Hey, Hey, Hey" and "Little Red Telephone" are quite derivative, but they're also quite infectious -- the Zots do have a way with a hook. Not a masterpiece but certainly enjoyable, Cars, Flowers, Telephones is worth hearing if you're in the mood for a big dose of 1960s nostalgia.
