It was an earlier time,1988, and Gabe, whod already released several albumson his 109 Records (109 St. Markswas the address of his store),quickly assented. Don Fury pro-duced the mostly minimalist tracksfrom 14 artists almost twenty yearsago. We made the record that wouldbecome the document of theAntiFolk scene, Gabe asserts,Mainly due to the Village Voice de-voting a lead music article to review-ing the record. Power of the pressLots of the acts are folk youve neverheard of. Mark Zero starts things offwith his White Trash, which risks falling into clich (butmaybe didnt at the time), and ends it with Resibaumssneering, incredible Blood on the Pavement, featuringGabes accompaniment on bass. In between, Tom Clarkdoes his folkabilly Trouble at Home, Joe Hurley (ofRogues March) presents a rambling, fascinating musi-cal travelogue, All Quiet on the Western Front. Theressome guy called Lach, doing a notably nasal Poor TownI wonder if he still knows the song. Despite the rapid clipof the recording, some people present some pretty over-blown affairs: Lauren Stauber sings over a keyboard-gen-erated beat on the epic Prisonville Blues, Wed begetting high, day and night, wondering why there wasnothing to do. Billy Syndrome rocks insanely out withHave You Seen the Cows. Its a track thats clearly proud of being loud. White Trash, Volume 1 made a fair amount of noise at the time - Urban Folk No. 9 This exquisite piece of retro music history is a vinyl sound recording (not a CD).
