That first love who was actually a psychopathic liar. That first car that was really a rattling death trap. So it was with great curiosity that one would attend the first reunion of Bowley and Wilson in over a decade. Held at Poor David's Pub on Saturday night, it was the return of a musical comedy duo that was wildly popular in the clubs that lined Greenville Avenue in the '80s. Um, the 1980s. John Wilson and John Bowley met as fraternity brothers at Southern Methodist University in 1968, and they soon found themselves playing in hangouts of yesteryear like Milo Butterfingers. Eventually, they graduated to their own clubs, first Up Your Alley and then their eponymous club. They specialized in musical presentations of off-color humor, and dragging audience members onstage for mocking torture. Many Dallasites got their first taste of club life, and live comedy, through those venues. "We did a radio show the other day, like at five in the morning," Mr. Wilson related to the sold-out Pub crowd Saturday night. "And there were so many people who called in to say, 'I puked for the first time at Bowley and Wilson's!' " The group had a good run until 1989, when the changing scene along Greenville led to the demise of its club, and the pair went on to less ribald, more legitimate careers. They reunited once in the mid-'90s, and decided once again to get together, citing the proximity of Valentine's Day (and all the people who met at their shows who eventually got married) as a motive force. Those who would avoid meeting that old lover or tremble before getting in that old car again need not fear the return of Bowley and Wilson. Sure their material is puerile (most of their song titles, or even subject matter, can't be directly referenced here), but by this time it isn't really about the songs, but what the audience was doing when they heard them. Supported by a full band (including keyboards and pedal steel), they went on a long tour of songs addressing such matters as nose-picking, SMU sorority girls, and flatulence. In between songs, there was the traditional mocking of audience members and many shout-outs to old friends in attendance. The whole vibe was that of a particularly raucous and ribald high school reunion, and despite how that sounds, in this case it was perfect. - sourceThis exquisite piece of retro music history is a vinyl sound recording (not a CD).
